"Golf-Ball Finding Glasses"

Friday May 26, 2006
Over at Gizmodo, there's a post about "golf-ball finding glasses":

You probably own tons of high-tech golf accessories, but they probably haven’t improved your game much. This gadget may be the most useful.

Uh ... no. The "golf-ball finding glasses" are actually named Visiball (check prices), and you can see demos on how they are supposed to work on the Visiball Web site. One important thing to keep in mind is that they are not sunglasses, so don't use them that way.

The manufacturer claims that when viewed through the Visiball glasses, those little white balls will appear to glow against a darker background. But we tried the Visiball glasses a while back and didn't find them to be very effective.

The problem is that the glasses don't help you see through whatever is hiding your ball. If I could see my ball without the glasses, then the ball didn't appear any easier to spot when I looked through the glasses. If I could not see my ball without the glasses, then put the glasses on, I still couldn't see it. Because most times, when you have trouble locating your ball, it's because the ball has rolled under some brush or has sunk to the bottom of a tall patch of grass.

So the end result was that the Visiball glasses didn't help me locate a single ball (of course, my ball is always in the middle of the fairway or green ... ). Think about it: if the ball is not obscured by grass or some other object, so that the Visiball is able to work its alleged magic, then you probably don't need any "magic" to spot the ball in the first place.

I received a pair of the Visiball glasses to test from the PGA partners club. Generally I agree with what you’re saying but once in a while in deep rough, when only a very small part of the ball is visible, the glasses seem to help because the white of the ball pops out at you, of course dandalions do to.
