According to the report in the Calgary Sun newspaper, Wasylowich played the front nine in 27 strokes. He opened the back nine with three consecutive pars, before making eagle and birdie on back-to-back holes, and went on to post a 30 on the back nine for the 57 total.
Wasylowich told the Sun:
It was so overwhelming that I don't know if I realize it yet. It's going to be hard to get back to that state of mind of just shooting 4- or 5-under. ... I played two days later and I remember it feeling impossible. I think I shot 69 but it felt like I shot 80.In his Going for the Green blog, golf writer Robert Thompson points out that "Paradise Canyon is a short course -- 6,800 yards from the tips -- but still has a course rating of 73.1."
The keepers of golf's official records only recognize scoring records set during official rounds - i.e., during tournament play. The Guinness Book of World Records only counts rounds played in professional or major amateur tournaments.
Three players - Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval - have posted 59s on the PGA Tour. Annika Sorenstam is the only player to score 59 on the LPGA Tour. In 2000, Shigeki Maruyama posted a round of 58 in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier.
