"Big Break V" - Episode 10

Tuesday April 18, 2006
"The Big Break V: Hawaii" has reached its Final Four. Episode 10 included more anti-Ashley sentiment running throughout, and the elimination of one of the five contestants who started the show.

Those five contestants were Becky, Kim, Ashley, Jeanne and Julie.

The episode begins with the Mulligan Challenge. In addition to a mulligan, also at stake is a $5,000 gift package from Golfsmith. The players will hit flop shots over a tall, solid wall to a green that has point circles drawn around the flagstick. High points wins the mulligan and the gift package.

Kim says before the challenge begins that the flop shop is one of her favorites. She and her father practiced such shots for hours at a time when she was young, hitting balls over the roof of their house.

Then she shows all that work paid off by scoring the maximum 5 points in both the first and second rounds, wrapping up the Mulligan Challenge before the third round even begins.

The Immunity Challenge is a game of H-O-R-S-E, only our contestants will be spelling B-R-E-A-K. More accurately, the aim is to avoid spelling it. Each player chooses a location from which all five must hit. The player from each location who gets closest to the pin avoids "earning" a letter; the remainder all do get a letter. In addition, the contestant closest-to-the-pin also gets to give an additional letter to one of the other players of her choosing.

In her interview segment, Ashley says she knows she'll be getting the extra letters if she isn't closest to the pin. Julie, in her interview segment, confirms it.

Then Julie goes out and does it. From the first location, a pitch shot over a bunker, Julie wins with a shot to 10 inches. The other four get the "B," and Julie gives Ashley the second letter.

From location two - a 68-yard shot - Julie wins again, knocking her ball to 11 feet, six inches. Julie has no letters; Kim, Jeanne and Becky each have B-R; and Ashley is up to B-R-E-A after Julie again gives her an extra letter.

At the third spot, Julie again wins, putting her greenside sand shot to 1 foot, 8 inches. Ashley is automatically eliminated, and Julie gives the extra letter to Jeanne this time.

Finally, from the fourth location - a 96-yard shot - someone other than Julie wins. This time, it's Becky, and Becky gives Julie the extra letter. Jeanne, because she didn't win, earns the fifth letter and is out.

At the fifth location, Julie can eliminate both Kim and Becky by winning. Which she does, hitting a pitch shot over a bunker to 1 foot, 7 inches. Julie earns immunity and is safe until the next episode.

Ashley, Becky, Jeanne and Kim move on to the Elimination Challenge. This is about distance control. A grid is drawn on the green, with points awarded for the correct distance. The row even with the flagstick is worth 5 points, the two rows (in front of and behind) that one are worth 3, and so on.

Each players hits three shots from three locations. The player with the most points after two rounds drops out, safe. The final three go on to the third location, and the low points earner is eliminated.

The first location is a 69-yard shot from a waste area. Ashley goes first and earns four points on her first shot, then 1 and 1 for a total of six. At this point, an interview interlude takes place.

Becky says of Ashley, "For what she talks, she either needs to step it up or talk less." And Julie adds, "She's a great player, but she's got a head on her that's enormous."

As I said last week, I'll say again: I saw nothing in this episode that puts Ashley in a bad light. Ashley said or did nothing - at least on camera, in the footage that series producers chose to broadcast - that was inappropriate, or even close to it, in my opinion.

Back to the challenge, where Becky follows with four points total, Kim with nine points and Jeanne with just three points.

The second location is a sidehill, downhill shot from 126 yards. Kim goes first and earns another nine points, for 18 total. Next is Ashley, who scores seven for 13 total. Becky follows with seven for 11 points total. And Jeanne scores big with three 4-point shots, 12 points for 15 points total. Kim, in the lead after Round 2, earns immunity and drops out.

Jeanne, Ashley and Becky move on to the final location, another sidehill lie for a 129-yard shot.

Jeanne scores five for 20 points total. Ashley bookends two 4-point shots around a zero, scoring eight for 21 points total. Ashley is safe.

Becky goes last and needs nine points to tie Jeanne, 10 points to earn safety and knock Jeanne out.

Becky's first shot is worth two points. Now she needs at least three points to stay alive. Becky's second fails to find the green, worth zero points.

Becky Lucidi is eliminated.

Julie’s comments are not golf related nor are they appropriate. Ashley’s interviews are mostly positive even when being ridiculed by Julie. Ashley has class and can play, Julie is as classless as her game.

The author should check his math. “And Jeanne scores big with four 4-point shots, 12 points for 15 points total. Kim, in the lead after Round 2, earns immunity and drops out.” 4X4 = 16, not 12. I believe Jeanne hit three 4-point shots. As for Ashley, she is a bit annoying and I don’t see much class there.

Alex, thanks for pointing out the error. You are correct, it was three shots worth four points each, not four shots.

Note to whomever is editing “The Big Break” Please do not change the shot so much. The other night I counted 11 camera angle changes while a putt was being lined up. This is really hard to watch. Try just focusing and leaving 1 camera to follow scene.
