How Weir-d
Monday February 13, 2006
Strange to see Mike Weir, a major champion, fall apart in the final round the way he did Sunday at Pebble Beach. It's not like he crumbled under the pressure of trying to catch or hold off Tiger Woods, after all. Aaron Oberholser had never won before on Tour. It's Oberholser, not Weir, you'd expect to crumble, if anyone was going to.
But it's been a weird couple years for Weir. After winning three times in 2003, including The Masters, Weir won once more in 2004. He added numerous top 10s in 2004, but also missed six cuts. That's a lot for a player of Weir's caliber.
But it wasn't as many missed cuts as Weir had in 2005, when he didn't win at all. Weir missed nine cuts last year, including four in a row and 6 of 7 during one stretch.
So far in 2006, it's hit-or-miss for Weir. In four tournaments, he's missed the cut twice. But in the two where he made the cut, he's finished fifth and third.
