Appleby Joins Exclusive Company

Monday January 9, 2006
When Stuart Appleby defeated Vijay Singh in a playoff to win the Mercedes Championship for the third consecutive year, he joined some exclusive company. Appleby is only the 13th player in the history of the PGA Tour to win the same tournament three times in a row or more.

The record-holders, with four straight wins in a single event, are Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and Tiger Woods (and going back to the mid-19th century, Young Tom Morris won four straight British Open crowns).

Appleby joins the group of greats who won the same event three times in a row. Hagen, Sarazen and Woods (twice) are on this list, too, along with Willie Anderson, Henry Picard, Ralph Guldahl, Ben Hogan, Gene Littler, Billy Casper, Arnold Palmer (twice), Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson.

What do all of those guys have in common? With the exception of Picard, they're all Hall-of-Famers (and Picard should be). Many have been predicting greatness for Appleby for years. Appleby has 7 career PGA Tour victories now. Will this finally be the year Appleby posts multiple wins, challenges for the money title, and gets his first major championship?

POLL: Which of these golfers do you think has the best shot at winning his first major championship in 2006? (Click your choice to cast vote)
1) Stuart Appleby
2) Sergio Garcia
3) Padraig Harrington
4) Adam Scott
