Equipment Update: Ball Bearings and Golf Balls

Monday December 26, 2005
What's new in the equipment world today? Let's take a look:

Vulcan Powerball V14 Driver: Vulcan Golf takes a new step in adjustable weight drivers. Rather than just offering the golfer the option to swap out a few weighted screws, the Powerball V14 driver also includes two channels wrapping around the sides of the driver to the rear, into which a golfer can plug weighted ball bearings. That's right, we said ball bearings. More

Nike One Golf Balls: The One Platinum and One Black golf balls will have a new look and some new technology in 2006. The new look is a cubed packaging; the new technology involves a modified core and changes to the dimple pattern and cover, respectively. More

But that's not all. Here's more stuff:

• CaddyBug USA: This under-the-radar company makes remote-controlled carts for walking golfers. We say "under the radar" because their buggy is not available in pro shops; it is available direct-to-the-consumer only, through the company website, and so far the company's marketing has taken place word-of-mouth. Well, now there's this blurb, too.

The managing director, Ron Richardson, says the direct-to-consumer model allows the company to keep prices low. CaddyBug USA's flagship model, the Green Fly 420, currently shows a sticker price of $499 - pretty cheap for a remote-controlled buggy. You can check out CaddyBug USA at the company's website.

• SMT Leather Golf Glove: What do you suppose a golf glove that carries an unconditional lifetime guarantee is made of? SMT's new Leather Golf Glove is made of New Zealand Possum Leather. Which is as good a use for a possum - Kiwi or otherwise - that I've yet seen. The price at this time is $59 per glove. More info

• Nakashima HTEC Driver: The newest driver from Nakashima Golf is called the HTEC, and it's made with Nakashima's Super Micro Grain forging process and minimal 2-piece, "pull-face" construction. This driver is being touted, however, for another quality: its CNC-milled, 7075 Aircraft-Grade Aluminum removeable hosel. A removeable hosel makes swapping out shafts a snap, and also is a great feature for a clubfitting session. The driver will be available in lofts ranging from 8.5 to 11.5 degrees and carry an MSRP of $579.99. Nakashima website
