SMT Moving Into Pro Shops with Finished Clubs

Thursday March 31, 2005
SMT Golf is a components company. It makes the clubheads preferred by some of the longest drivers in the world, including the 455 Deep Bore and Spectrum clubheads.

As with other component companies, SMT's offerings have, in the past, only been available as pieces: Buy a clubhead from SMT, have a club builder put in a shaft and grip the shaft, and you've got a driver. But now, SMT has something new in store.

Make that something new in stores: SMT Golf will be offering pre-built drivers and other finished clubs in golf retail outlets.

SMT components are the driver heads of choice for four RE/MAX World Long Drive Champions, and SMT has been a favorite for a while with golf's equipment aficionados.

Now, golfers who want the convenience of buying a finished club rather than having a club built (or building it themselves) will have the option of trying SMT.

The company's recent hiring of a sales staff means that SMT clubs will soon begin showing up in golf retail outlets. The finished clubs will include a proprietary Accuflex shaft designed specifically for SMT, but other shaft options will also be available to consumers. SMT's drivers and fairway woods are part of the plan, as are the irons, hybrids and wedges the company will soon be adding to its product line.

"This is a whole new endeavor for us," said Mike Tait, President of SMT Golf. "But the public has been asking for this for a while now, and we felt it was time. Our focus will still remain first and foremost with the distributors and club makers we work with as a component company. This new pre-assembled line is for the type of customer that likes to pick out a new club and put it into play the same day."

PGA Tour Superstores will begin stocking SMT finished clubs soon, as will other on- and off-course pro shops. Be on the lookout at golf retails shops near you.
