Prototype Titleist Driver Sells for More than $2,000
Monday February 21, 2005
Would you pay over $2,000 for a new driver? That's what one serious golfer did on eBay recently, shelling out $2,074 to be the first kid on his block with a Titleist 905, the successor to the 983 series drivers.
The 905 prototypes have been in use on the PGA Tour since late last year. Ernie Els, among many other Titleist players, has been using the 905, and Ernie had some interesting comments on the new driver earlier this year at the Buick Invitational. Said Ernie: "... it's a weird sound that the ball makes off the club face. ... Then we went to the test center yesterday, and I started hitting these drivers and this one that makes the weird sound was carrying by far the furthest."
The Titleist 905 driver and 904 fairway woods are expected to hit stores around mid-year. In the meantime, if you can't wait to have one and are willing to shell out some big bucks, keep an eye on the golf auctions at eBay. Several other prototypes have also shown up. You can view photos of the 905 on this auction page (you must be registered with eBay to view).
