Vijay Overtakes Tiger for No. 1

Monday September 6, 2004
It finally happened. Tiger Woods is no longer the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, something that hasn't been true since David Duval was No. 1 for 15 weeks in 1999. With his victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday, Vijay Singh is now ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Can Vijay hold onto No. 1? Can Tiger reclaim his spot? Will Ernie Els or Phil Mickelson make the jump? Make your predictions in our latest poll: Who will be No. 1 at the end of 2005?

Singh, meanwhile, is just the 12th golfer to hold the No. 1 spot since the world golf rankings were launched in 1986.

When the world golf rankings were launched in 1986, Bernhard Langer held the top spot in the initial rankings. Langer's stay at the top was brief - just three weeks - before he was displaced by Seve Ballesteros.

Joining Langer and Ballesteros in this exclusive club are Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Tom Lehman, Woods, Els, Duval and now Singh.
