Els: Ban the Long Putter

Friday May 21, 2004
Ernie Els thinks it's time to sweep the broomstick putter under the rug. The long putter is known by several names, but no matter what its called, Els doesn't like it - and would like to see it banned. "Nerves and putting, I think is part of the game," Els said in this report from the Associated Press. "It's become such an easy way to putt. You can make a perfect stroke." Read the article.

I fully agree with Ernie the long putter should be banned. For me the use of these putters is a form of approved cheating…and they look wrong!

Amazing. I think we should also ban titanium drivers, steel shafts, and multi layer balls. I changed to the longer putter because it allowed me to practice longer. You still have to see the line and roll it the exact amount of distance. How is a long putter any more non-traditional than that square head driver that Els now swings. Of course, a 5 mil contract from Callaway will make you forger all about tradition…

Hogwash. You can use what’s comfortable for you, and I’ll do likewise.

Incidentally, Ken’s assessment of the long putter is “right on.” I too, use the long putter because it helps my back, to some degree.

I have had five back operations and find using a long putter very helpful. I play off four handicap now used to be scratch and I think those people including Mr Els should think of the players that need help in carrying on playing this marvellous game.
