The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) recently surveyed its membership - those too-often-overlooked professionals who keep golf courses in playing shape - on some interesting questions. Many of them related to course maintenance issues, of course, but other results were of a much broader interest. For example, superintendents were asked to compare Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Read on for more information about results.
The Nicklaus vs. Woods question was this: "Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have been the two most dominant players of the past 40 years. In your opinion, which one of them faced the best competition from other players?" The answer, according to 59-percent of the superintendents responding: Nicklaus.
However, when asked to pick a winner if Nicklaus and Woods squared off when both were in their prime, 47-percent picked Tiger. This question is discussed the GCSAA news release on the survey, but for some reason does not appear among the results posted on the GCSAA Web site.
There are plenty of interesting results posted on the Web, however, including those to this question: "Among the golfers you see at your course, what would help them the most?" Fifty-percent of the superintendents selected the answer, "Taking a playing lesson that emphasized course management."
As we said at the beginning, many of the questions and answers relate to course management and turfgrass issues. Not the most exciting stuff. But if you want to take a look, click over to the GCSAA survey results.
