Wie Ousted in First Round at U.S. Women's Amateur
Thursday August 7, 2003
It's a measure of just how remarkable Michelle Wie is that when a 13-year-old girl loses in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, we react with surprise.
After finishing runner-up in the medal round to Aree Song, Wie was KO'd in the first round of match play Thursday by Maru Martinez. A recap of Wie's round and other first- and second-round matches is available here on espn.com.
After all the yammering about Tiger Woods' supposed slump, you'd think someone would be talking about Wie's supposed slump by now. OK, I'll talk about it! I just won't endorse the idea, at least not fully.
Wie's early departure from the Women's Amateur comes after she lost in a middle round of the U.S. Girls Amateur (falling to Morgan Pressel). Perhaps the wear and tear of a busy summer - and one with it's share of controversy - is wearing on Wie?
Or perhaps she's simply an amazingly gifted 13-year-old - and one whose golf game, as advanced as it is, is still in need of much refinement.
No matter where Wie goes in years to come - to unseen heights of glory or into obscurity - we should appreciate her game and give her as much support as we can.
Especially because she has plenty left to do this summer. She's playing against the men twice, this month in a Canadian Tour event and next month in a Nationwide Tour event. I hope she makes the cut in both. Given that she's shot 73 against the men in PGA Tour Monday qualifying, don't put it past her.
