Jolly Good, Ben Curtis!
Sunday July 20, 2003
Any golf fans who weren't aware of Ben Curtis before Sunday sure are now. The little-known Ohioan is the 2003 British Open champion, surviving a grueling four days at Royal St. George's as the only player under par.
We've posted links to some articles on the unlikely result on our British Open homepage. We've also posted a poll on this question: Is this the biggest surprise ever in major championship history?
The contenders, as we see them: Francis Ouimet's win in the 1913 U.S. Open; Jack Fleck outplaying Ben Hogan for the 1955 U.S. Open; and John Daly winning the 1991 PGA Championship.
Meantime, just who is Ben Curtis? He was the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, by GolfWeek magazine, in 2000. But this is his first year on the PGA Tour - in only his 16th start as a PGA Tour member, he is the British Open champion. The PGA Tour's bio page on Curtis provides some good info.
